What's the best kid carrier backpack for hiking with little ones?

I’m planning a few hiking trips this summer and I really want to take my toddler along for the adventure. I’ve been doing some research on kid carrier backpacks and there are so many options out there! Here are a few things I’m considering:

  • Safety: I want to ensure my child is secure and safe while hiking.
  • Comfort: Both for me and my child; I heard some models can get uncomfortable after a few hours.
  • Storage: I need enough space for snacks, water, and maybe a few toys.
  • Weight: I’ve heard some models can be really heavy; any tips on lightweight options?

I’d love to hear your experiences! What carrier do you recommend? Are there specific brands or models that have worked well for you? Any tips on taking kids hiking would be appreciated too! Looking forward to your feedback!

Thanks!

I recently tried the Osprey Poco Plus and found the padding exceptional for both my little one and myself. The adjustable harness really helps distribute weight evenly, making long hikes so much more enjoyable.

I’ve heard great things about Osprey! But how does it compare to others like the Deuter Kid Comfort? Anyone have experience with that one?

The Deuter Kid Comfort has amazing lumbar support and allows for a pretty comfortable fit. My child loves it too, especially the sunshade addition!

I agree, but I also found it a bit bulky for longer hikes. How do you think it stacks up against the Thule Sapling?

I love the Thule Sapling! It’s lightweight and easy to adjust. My favorite feature is the quick adjustments for the back panel, which makes switching between me and my partner seamless.

That’s great to hear! Is there enough padding, though? I am concerned about comfort on long treks.

For our long hikes, the padding in the Thule Sapling has held up well for both of us! Just ensure you adjust the hip belt properly, and it should be comfy! Worth every penny.

I’ve been considering a carrier and would love to know: what are the downsides of each option? Maybe I should just consider a sling instead!

Slings can be great for quick outings! But for longer hikes, nothing beats the structure of a backpack. Controversial, I know, but comfort is key.

Valid point! I never thought about it that way. Do you think changing brands often provides better options, or is it about the design?

For me, it’s all about trying different designs. Some brands focus more on adult comfort, while others prioritize the child. It’s finding the right balance!

That’s interesting. Are some brands better at ergonomics than others, or is it often just a personal fit? I once had a bad experience with an ill-fitting carrier.

Oh, I’ve had that experience too! It’s like trying on shoes; what fits one might not fit another. Always test it out before committing!

I like the idea of testing! Also, let’s be honest: it’s pretty humorous when kids just sit there with those giant backpacks. They look like little explorers! :joy:

I recently purchased the Osprey Poco Plus for our hikes, and I’m impressed by the safety harness system. It keeps our little one secure while allowing us to focus on stability. Highly recommend it!

That’s great to hear! I’ve been considering that model. What materials does it use for comfort and safety?

Good question! The Osprey Poco Plus has an aluminum frame and ripstop nylon, which is both durable and safe. It’s lightweight too, making hiking easier.

I have the Deuter Kid Comfort 2, and I appreciate the three-point safety harness. It gives me peace of mind during our steep hikes.

Sounds great, but how does it perform in terms of stability on rough terrain?
