What are the best things to do in Clayton, NM?

I’ve been planning a trip to Clayton, NM, and I’m eager to know more about the outdoor activities and attractions in the area. From my research, I’ve stumbled upon some fantastic options like Clayton Lake State Park and Rita Blanca/Kiowa National Grassland, but I’m looking for firsthand insights from those who have experienced them.

Clayton Lake State Park

I’ve read that Clayton Lake State Park offers stunning scenery and great opportunities for boating, picnicking, and camping. Fishing is also popular here; what kinds of fish can you catch? Are there any specific spots that locals recommend?

  • Boating: What is the best time of year for boating here? Are there any boat rentals available, or should I bring my own?
  • Camping: Are the campgrounds well-maintained? Can you think of any must-have gear for camping in Clayton? What’s the atmosphere like in the evening?

Outdoor Adventures in Rita Blanca/Kiowa National Grassland

I’m also curious about exploring the grassland. Hiking seemed like a popular activity, and I wonder if there are marked trails or if I should plan a specific route.

  • Hiking Tips: Are any trails easier for beginners? What should I prepare for in terms of gear, wildlife safety, or terrain?
  • Exploration: Are there any hidden gems or spots that may not be listed in travel guides?

Clayton, NM is a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts! Hiking in the nearby Cimarron Canyon is a must. The trails range from easy to challenging, so there’s something for everyone. Spring and fall are the best seasons to explore them.

Absolutely! One of my favorites is the North Ponil Creek trail. It offers beautiful views and is great for birdwatching, especially in the early morning.

If you’re into fishing, head to Ute Lake! The bluegill and largemouth bass fishing there is fantastic. Late spring through summer is the prime time for fishing.

I’ve heard great things about Ute Lake too! Any specific spots there you’d recommend for a beginner?

Definitely try the fishing area near the boat ramp! It’s easily accessible and perfect for beginners. Plus, you’ll often see locals there who are happy to share tips!

For birdwatching, the Rita Blanca National Grassland is incredible! I saw several species of raptors last fall. Bring your binoculars and check the site during migration seasons for the best experience.

Sounds amazing! What time of year do you recommend going for the best variety of birds?

Spring and early fall are best for diverse species. The birds are migrating, and the views are stunning. It’s a peaceful place to enjoy nature as well!

I love Clayton! But can it get a bit boring doing the same outdoor activities? What else is there besides fishing and hiking?

I get that! There are also lots of historical sites to check out. You could combine a nice hike with a visit to the old hotel ruins nearby. It makes for a fun new adventure!

Now that sounds interesting! Does anyone know if those ruins are accessible year-round?

Yes! The ruins are always accessible, but summer can be tough with the heat. I recommend going early in the morning or later in the evening during those months.

Also, don’t forget to stay hydrated while hiking! Dehydration is no joke in the desert, unless you want to become a living mummy—no one wants that! :joy:

Clayton has some fascinating historical sites! Definitely check out the Clayton Historic Courthouse. It’s a beautiful building with a lot of local history.

I’ve also heard that the Old Town Plaza has interesting events that celebrate local culture. Anyone know when those happen?
