Thoughts on Hornady 300 Win Mag 178 ELD-X for Elk Hunting?

I’ve heard great things about H1000. Any tips for working up loads safely?

Sure! Start low and work your way up in increments. Always check for pressure signs on the case. It’s better to be safe than sorry, especially with higher charges.

I’ve had some challenges with consistency when reloading. Sometimes the crimp can cause issues in the field. Anyone else face this?

That’s interesting, I never thought of that. I usually just focus on the seating depth. Do you use a taper or roll crimp?

I only use a roll crimp for these cartridges. Just ensures they hold better under recoil. Have you tried switching to a different crimp style?

Switching crimp styles could help, I’ll try that! The feedback here is really helpful. I sometimes joke that getting reloads right is like hitting a deer; it’s all about precision!

Haha, that’s a great analogy! Precision is key. Practice definitely pays off, doesn’t it?

Speaking of practice, how often do you all go to the range with your reloads? I’m eager to see how the 178 ELD-X performs.

I try to make it at least once a month! It really helps in refining loads and boosting confidence for the hunt.

That’s a good routine! I sometimes skip the range and just trust my reloading skills. Probably not the best idea, but it’s part of the thrill, isn’t it?

True, but don’t tell my wife! She thinks I’m a perfectionist. Haha!

Haha! That’s hilarious. But you’re smart to keep at it. Consistency is key, especially for elk hunting.

I’ve been using the Hornady 300 Win Mag 178 ELD-X for a couple of seasons now. The ballistic coefficient is impressive, and I’ve had good results on elk. How does it compare to other brands like Federal’s Fusion?

I switched from the Fusion to the ELD-X, and I noticed that the ELD-X has better expansion at longer ranges. The Fusion had decent accuracy but didn’t perform as well on impact for me.

I prefer the ELD-X for its consistency on game. I’ve also tried the Nosler Partition, but I find the ELD-X has a flatter trajectory. Has anyone experienced significant recoil differences between these?

The recoil of the 300 Win Mag can definitely be hefty, but I’ve found the ELD-X to be manageable. Anyone else think it’s a good compromise between power and shootability?

Absolutely! I can shoot it comfortably, but I still use a muzzle brake for added control. It helps especially when taking those longer shots.

Price-wise, the ELD-X is on the higher end, but I believe it’s worth every penny for elk hunting. How do the expenses compare with other high-performance ammo like the Winchester AccuBond?

The AccuBond is also pricey, but it performs excellently. The downside is that I’ve had some issues with consistent grouping. ELD-X definitely seems to hold tighter groups for me.

Same here! I switched to ELD-X after frustrations with the AccuBond and have been much happier since.
