Looking for Varget Reloading Data for .308!

Introduction

I’ve recently gotten into reloading and am particularly interested in using Varget powder for my .308 loads. I’ve read that it’s quite popular among shooters for its consistency and performance. However, I wanted to tap into the community’s knowledge to gather some practical insights.

Seeking Specifics

I’m looking for detailed reloading data for .308 caliber cartridges. If you have any loads that you’ve personally found to be accurate or effective, I would really appreciate you sharing them! Specifically, I’m interested in:

  • Bullet types and weights: What bullets have you had success with using Varget?
  • OAL (Overall Length): How does your chosen OAL affect performance with Varget?
  • Primers: Any particular primer recommendations for consistency?
  • Powder Charges: What powder charge do you recommend for best results?

Safety Considerations

Also, if anyone has tips on safety measures while reloading, especially when working with .308 and Varget, it would be great to hear your advice. We all know that safety comes first, and I want to ensure I’m doing this correctly!

Conclusion

Thanks in advance for any feedback or shared experiences! I’m excited to learn from the community and improve my reloading skills, especially with such a reputable powder like Varget. Looking forward to your replies!

I’m also looking for Varget data for .308! What are your thoughts on optimal powder charges?

I’ve had great success with a starting load of 42.0 grains. Good velocity and accuracy, but always work up carefully!

I’m curious if anyone has had issues with pressure? That amount seems high to me!

I usually stay around 40.0 to 41.0 grains for safety. You can always tweak upwards as needed!

I agree with wlynch! It’s better to be cautious, especially with .308 loads. Have you tried using magnum primers with Varget?

No magnum primers here! Just standard CCI. Has anyone noticed differences in case life with reloading .308 with Varget?

With Varget, I find the brass lasts surprisingly long if you don’t overload. It really burns clean, too!

That’s good to know! I was worried about residue affecting performance. How does it compare to other powders?

Varget is my go-to! I think it’s more forgiving than others like H4895 when it comes to stretching loads. Anyone else agree?

Totally agree! I’ve had great results as well.

How about pressure? I’m worried about pushing past 44 grains. Are there any signs I should look for?

Watch for flattened primers and sticky extraction. Those can be indicators you’ve gone too far.

Totally agree, looks for flattening or heavy bolt lift. Rare for Varget, but it can happen!

I had a disaster with some overpressure rounds once! Made me respect Varget more. Always start low and work up!

Funny you say that, I had a similar experience! When we push it, we’re way past safe—better to be cautious!

Absolutely! I’ve learned to trust the chronograph, too.

All this talk makes me want to hit the range! Good luck to everyone reloading!

I’m also looking for Varget reloading data for .308! I’ve heard it provides great consistency. Has anyone compared it to H4895 for accuracy?

Varget is indeed worth considering! I find it often outperforms H4895 in terms of consistency, especially with heavier bullets.
