Best Places to Hunt in Idaho: Seeking Your Tips!

I’m planning a hunting trip to Idaho and could really use some advice on the best places to hunt. I’ve heard a lot about Idaho’s incredible wildlife, especially for elk and mule deer, but I’m not sure where to start. I’d love to hear from those who have experience hunting in Idaho!

What I’m Looking For:

  • Specific Locations: Are there particular areas known for having a good population of elk or mule deer?
  • Hunting Tactics: Any tips on techniques that have worked well for you?
  • Seasonal Insights: What times of year are best for hunting in these locations?

General Questions:

  • Are there any must-have permits or regulations I should be aware of?
  • How about local guides? Worth the investment?

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to hearing your stories and suggestions to make this trip a success. Thanks in advance!

Idaho is known for its diverse game species! If you’re looking for deer, the Boise National Forest is fantastic. Elk hunting can be great in the Clearwater region. Just remember to check the regulations for tags!

Have you ever tried waterfowl hunting around Bear Lake? I’ve heard the migration season is incredible there!

I’ve had great success with elk in the Sawtooth range. The landscapes are stunning, and they really know how to hide. Patience is key when hunting there!

Absolutely! I find that early morning hunts yield the best results. Anyone else have tips on the best times to hunt?

I’ve mainly hunted deer near Coeur d’Alene. They’re everywhere! It’s a great beginner spot since the terrain isn’t overly challenging.

That’s good to know! What time of year do you recommend hunting in that area?

I prefer late fall for deer hunting in Coeur d’Alene. That’s when they’re more active before the winter. Fewer hunters too!

I’m looking into waterfowl hunting as well. Do you guys think that a beginner should start with geese or ducks?

Both are fun! I’d suggest starting with ducks; they’re often easier to approach and offer great practice.

In my experience, waterfowl hunting is best around the Snake River during the migration. It can be crowded, but the action is worth it!

I enjoy the camaraderie at those spots! But is it really that competitive out there?

You bet! I recommend arriving early to snag a good spot. The atmosphere can be very lively, especially on weekends. Be prepared for some friendly competition!

It’s interesting how every region has its quirks for hunting. I’ve had completely different experiences hunting elk vs. deer. Anyone else notice that?

Idaho is a great place for hunting! For big game like elk, the best time is typically between late September and early November. The rut is a great time to catch them active!

Absolutely! Also, don’t forget about waterfowl. Late October to November is prime time as they migrate down south. Great for duck hunting!

I’ve found late spring to be good for turkeys. The season starts in April; just make sure to check local regulations for exact dates!

Good point! Many overlook spring hunting. I always scout locations ahead; helps in planning when to visit.

What’s the best area for elk? I’ve heard mixed opinions about the Sawtooth and Clearwater regions. Anyone have solid experiences?

From my experience, Clearwater has plenty of game and good access. But keep an eye on the migration, they can move around!
