Best Load Data for .338 Lapua Magnum?

Seeking Load Data for .338 Lapua Magnum

Hi all, I’m looking to get some guidance on loading data for the .338 Lapua Magnum. I’ve been getting into long-range shooting and I want to make sure I’m optimizing my ammo for the best performance possible.

Here are some specifics I’m curious about:

  • Powder types: What powders do you find work best for this cartridge?
  • Projectile weights: Any recommendations for bullet weights that perform well at distance?
  • OAL (Overall Length): What length are you using for optimal chambering and performance?
  • Tips and trick: Any reloading techniques that you swear by?

I’ve done some research myself, but it’s always great to hear from fellow enthusiasts about what has worked in the field. Looking forward to hearing your experiences and suggestions!

Thanks in advance for your help!

I’m looking for the best powders for .338 Lapua Magnum as well. I’ve heard great things about the Hodgdon H1000 and IMR 7828. What do you all recommend?

I definitely recommend Hodgdon H1000. It’s a versatile powder for longer range shooting and gives excellent velocity. Plus, it burns clean!

I’ve had good results with Retumbo for .338 Lapua. It’s a slower powder, but really shines at long distances. Anyone else tried it?

Retumbo is solid, but I found that it requires some tweaking for optimal performance. If you’re looking for consistency, it’s worth it! Just be patient with load development.

So would faster burning powders like Varget be a good choice for shorter range shooting? I’m trying to optimize my load for a specific competition.

For competitions, I’d recommend sticking with slower powders for the .338. Stability at distance is key! I’d suggest the Vihtavuori N570.

I’ve seen some people use Accurate MAGPRO. Has anyone else tried it? I’m curious about its performance compared to others mentioned here.

Accurate MAGPRO is decent, but it can be a bit finicky with temperature changes. It works for some loads, but I’d prefer H1000 for consistency across seasons.

Temperature sensitivity is a great point! It makes me wonder how different powders handle environmental changes. Any tips on managing this?

Great question! Using a chronograph to test your load at different temperatures can help you adjust your powder charge accordingly.

I love how everyone is sharing different experiences! Makes the quest for the perfect load a bit more exciting! Just remember, it might take some time to find what works best for you.

But seriously, what if we just threw a bunch of different powders into a blender and called it a new powder? Joking aside, it really is a science to get it right!

I’m currently using a 250 gr bullet from Hornady for long-range target shooting. The stability and accuracy have been impressive! Anyone else had good experiences with this weight?

I agree, I’ve had great luck with the 250 gr ELD-M bullets too! They provide excellent consistency for long-range work.

For hunting, I’ve switched to the 300 gr AccuBond. It seems to have better terminal performance on big game, particularly at extended ranges. Worth a try!

That’s a solid choice, but is it too much bullet for smaller deer? I’ve heard mixed opinions on bullet weight vs terminal performance.

It can be, but if you aim for heart/lung zones, the clean kills can be worth it! Balance is key.

I’ve also experimented with lighter bullets, like the 230 gr. They seem to allow for a flatter trajectory. I think I prefer them for target shooting.

That’s interesting, but I feel like going lighter could compromise accuracy. Have you done any tests at range?
