Any Tips for Fishing on the Isle of Wight?

I’m planning a fishing trip to the Isle of Wight and I’m looking for any advice on the best spots to fish. Whether you’re a local or someone who’s fished there before, your insights would be greatly appreciated!

Here’s what I’m trying to find out:

  • Best Locations: I’d like to know where I can find the best fishing spots. Are there specific beaches or piers that are known for good catches?
  • Charter Services: Are there any fishing charters you would recommend? I’m open to both deep-sea fishing and nearshore options.
  • Types of Fish: What kind of fish should I expect to catch? Are there any seasonal changes to be aware of?
  • Fishing Techniques: Any tips on effective fishing techniques or bait that works well in the area?

What I’m Bringing:

I’ll be taking my own gear but if there are any local tips on what works best, I’m all ears!

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I can’t wait to make my trip memorable and catch some great fish!

The Isle of Wight has some great fishing spots! For saltwater, try Ventnor or Yarmouth. Freshwater fishing is popular at Newtown River. Both locations have good accessibility.

I absolutely agree! I’ve had some great experiences at Ventnor. The scenery is beautiful and the fish are plentiful!

Don’t forget about Sandown Bay! It’s also a fantastic spot for both pier and beach fishing. Be sure to check the tides before you go.

Sandown Bay is a hidden gem! Thanks for the reminder. Do you have any tips on bait for that area?

Mackerel and squid work well in Sandown! Also, try emerging with a light tackle, especially in early summer. Good luck!

For freshwater, don’t miss the lakes around Compton. They are usually less crowded and great for carp fishing!

Great suggestions! Any specific time of year that’s best for mackerel fishing?

Mackerel are usually best caught in late summer, from July through September. They come in closer to shore during that time.

Is anyone here familiar with the fishing spots near Cowes? I’ve heard mixed reviews about accessibility there.

Cowes has some good spots, but the access can be tricky. Look for the areas around the marina; they have more welcoming paths.

I prefer freshwater fishing, but I’ve heard that the coastline offers some stunning fishing opportunities! Can you really catch different species?

Definitely, the Isle of Wight has diversity! You can catch bass, flatfish, and even the occasional cod from the shore. Worth a try!

Wow, that sounds exciting! Is there a particular bait that works best for those?

For bass, live bait like small eels or peeler crabs works wonders. Fished closer to the rocks can increase your chances!

Fishing is great, but sometimes the weather can ruin the day! Last time at Yarmouth, I got soaked! Anyone else have any funny fishing mishaps?

I love fishing around the Isle of Wight! For a successful trip, try using light tackle for smaller species like mackerel. A good spinning rod and reel will work wonders.

I agree! Mackerel are so fun to catch. I also recommend using feathers for bait—they’re really effective!

Another great spot is off Sandown beach, especially during the early morning. I’ve caught some good whiting there. Just be prepared to change your rig frequently based on the current.

Absolutely! Adapting your gear to the conditions is key. Using a heavier lead when the tide is strong works best.
