I’m trying to decide between the 7mm Weatherby Magnum and the 7mm Remington Magnum for my upcoming hunting trips. I’ve done some reading, but I’d love to get insights from those who have experience with both cartridges.
Here are a few things I’m particularly curious about:
Ballistics performance: How do they compare in terms of velocity and trajectory?
Recoil: Which one has less kick? I want a cartridge that’s easier to manage over long days in the field.
Effective range: For long-range shooting, which cartridge performs better?
Hunting scenarios: Are there specific game types where one cartridge would be more suitable than the other?
Any personal experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to hearing what others think!
I’ve used both cartridges for elk hunting. The 7mm Weatherby tends to have less bullet drop at extended ranges, making it great for long shots. However, the 7mm Rem Mag is more common and offers decent performance too.
That’s a great point! I think wind drift is also an important factor. The Weatherby handles it well, but how much do you notice that difference in lighter winds?
For sure! In my experience, the 7mm Weatherby has a flatter trajectory, which is super helpful when hunting at high altitudes. But I’ve taken down a few deer with the Rem Mag and it performs just fine.
Exactly! The flatter trajectory minimizes the chances of missing due to bullet drop. It’s really about what you’re comfortable with and the types of game you’re hunting.
Both are great choices. I recently went with the 7mm Rem Mag because of the ammo availability. It’s everywhere and saves me hassle on trips. Plus, it has a bit more kick if you’re going for bigger game.
I’ve never seriously compared the two until now. Anyone have insights on recoil? The 7mm Weatherby sounds like it might be a bit much for me since I’m sensitive to recoil.
That’s a concern for sure! The Rem Mag tends to have a more manageable recoil compared to the Weatherby. If you don’t want to end up flinching, you might want to stick with the Rem Mag.
Great thoughts everyone! I’m leaning toward the Weatherby for its performance, but I wonder how the costs compare for ammo over time. Is the Weatherby worth it?
That’s a valid question. The Weatherby is usually pricier per round, but I think it pays off in performance. Have you tried shooting both to see which fits you better?
I haven’t shot either yet! Just doing my research. Just for fun, what if we throw in the 7mm-08 for comparison? Any thoughts about how it stacks up against these two?
The 7mm-08 is certainly lighter and easier on the shoulder but lacks the range and power of both the Weatherby and Rem Mag for larger game hunting. It really depends on what you’re hunting for.
Getting lost in the specs is easy! Either way, I’ll probably end up with one and just hope I remember to breathe on the shot. That’s the real challenge, right? Haha.
When considering recoil, the 7mm Weatherby does tend to have a bit more punch than the 7mm Rem Mag. This can impact comfort during long shooting sessions, especially for those sensitive to recoil.
The difference in recoil might be more noticeable for some shooters compared to others. The Rem Mag generally has less perceived recoil, making it a favorite for long sessions at the range.
I definitely felt more fatigue after shooting the Weatherby compared to the Rem Mag on my last trip. That said, I love the power of the Weatherby for bigger game!
