.17 HMR vs .17 WSM: Which is the Better Choice for Small Game Hunting?

I feel like I need to try the .17 WSM just to see what all the fuss is about! Anyone have a favorite brand for ammo that won’t break the bank?

For budget ammo, I’d suggest checking out CCI for the .17 HMR. They have good quality and performance for the price!

I love Prvi Partizan for .17 WSM; it’s reasonably priced and has worked well for me whenever I’ve used it.

.17 HMR is fantastic for small game like rabbits and squirrels. The flat trajectory helps a lot in open fields.

True, but .17 WSM has a higher velocity. It’s great for longer shots, especially in windy conditions.

I’ve used both calibers for pest control. .17 HMR is quieter, which is a bonus for urban settings.

Good point! However, if pests are larger, .17 WSM packs more punch. It’s about choosing the right tool for the job.

.17 WSM for larger pests, absolutely! I’ve seen some great results on groundhogs with it. Worth considering the ethical shot placement though.

Definitely! We should always ensure a humane kill, regardless of the caliber used.

Does anyone else find the recoil on .17 HMR a bit easier to manage? I’m all about comfort when shooting.

I agree! But I’ve heard some say the .17 WSM can be less accurate for beginners. Is that true?

I find both calibers very manageable! The .17 WSM has its quirks, but with practice, it’s just as accurate for small game.
