What’s the best .308 deer ammo out there?

I tried the Barnes TSX last season, and the performance was incredible! The terminal ballistics are something else for those tough shots. Just a bit more expensive though.

That sounds amazing! The price can be a bummer, but maybe it’s worth it. Anyone else find that premium ammo is worth the investment?

If it makes the shot count, I believe it’s worth it! I’ve also had some fun with lighter bullets for more speed. Any thoughts on that?

Lightweight’s great for range but can it do the job on bigger deer? I’ve had mixed results myself.

I always stick to what works for me. Just remember to practice with whatever ammo you choose! Even the best can fail if you aren’t familiar with it.

Totally agree! It’s all about confidence in your shot. Happy hunting, everyone!

When selecting .308 ammo for deer hunting, consider your environment. In wooded areas, a bullet with good expansion at slower speeds can be beneficial, while open fields may require a heavier bullet for longer ranges.

That’s a great point! I’ve had success with 150-grain soft points in fields, but in forests, I switched to 165-grain for better impact.

Make sure to consider distance to target too. At 200 yards, a well-constructed bullet will perform better against a deer’s tough hide than a lightweight option. I’d recommend checking your ammo’s ballistics for best results.

Definitely, Katherine! I’ve often fired 250 yards or more in open zones and found that the heavier bullets help maintain energy and accuracy.

Don’t forget the impact of the terrain! In hilly areas, you might want a flatter shooting round. I prefer 165 grain for my mountainous hunts to avoid drop-off.

Exactly! My favorite is a 180-grain round when terrain is unpredictable; it cuts through the air like a champ!

I’m curious about how bullet design affects performance in different environments. Hollow points for open fields vs. soft tips for dense woods could change your success rate.

Great question, Tammy! I think it often comes down to personal preference too. I generally stick with soft points everywhere!

Just remember to practice with your ammunition before hunting season! It makes a world of difference when you’re confident in your shot, regardless of the environment.

So true! Nothing worse than realizing your ammo doesn’t perform like you expected out in the field!

Honestly, sometimes I just grab what’s available! Hunting is more about the experience for me. But hey, due diligence matters too, right?

I hear you, but that can lead to some funny moments out in the woods! We all have our bullet blunders, right?!
