Weight is crucial! Generally, heavier bullets stabilize better, especially with conicals. I usually stick to around 300 grains for the best balance.
I mainly use sabots since they give a lot of flexibility with modern bullets. They’re a bit more expensive, but the performance is often worth it.
[quote=“contrerasjustin, post:5, topic:2222”]I mainly use sabots…[quote]What kind of sabots have you found to work best? There are so many options out there, it can be overwhelming!
I like using Hornady sabots with XTP bullets. They give consistent accuracy and good expansion. Just make sure your twist rate matches!
I’ve found round balls tend to be more forgiving on the range. You don’t need as much precision loading them, unlike sabots which require a snug fit.
That’s true! If you’re just starting out, round balls can definitely keep things simple.
What about powder charges? Does anyone have preferences that seem to complement their projectiles well?
I usually start around 70 grains of FFG for conicals. It provides good velocity without too much recoil, making shooting enjoyable.
[quote=“schaefererin, post:11, topic:2222”]I usually start around 70 grains of FFG for conicals…[quote]That sounds reasonable! I’ve been experimenting but ended up with a lot of smoke and not much accuracy!
Just remember, if it feels like you’re smoking out the range, you’re probably using too much powder! Sometimes less is more.

Honestly, try a variety! Different combinations of projectiles and powders yield unique experiences. It’s part of the fun of muzzleloading.
I really enjoy the process of fine-tuning my loads. It takes patience but is so rewarding when you find that perfect combination!
I’m new to muzzleloading, but I’ve been experimenting with 70 grains of FFg black powder and a .50 caliber ball. It seems to work well for me so far. Anyone else tried this load?
I’ve been using a similar load! I stick with 75 grains of powder and it shoots pretty straight for me. Have you tried different wads yet?
For the best accuracy, I recommend testing different loads. I’ve had great success with 80 grains of powder in my Traditions, using a patched round ball.
I agree with tsanders! Experimenting really helps. Also, your loading technique is crucial—make sure to seat the bullet firmly and evenly.
Don’t forget to clean your barrel thoroughly after each shot! It really impacts performance, especially with heavier loads. I use a 65-grain load with a 50 cal and it feels very smooth.
Excellent point! A clean barrel definitely makes a difference. I usually go with 90 grains for deer season!
Just a heads up: safety first! Always use the right gear and check your equipment before shooting. I load 70 grains and it’s worked like a charm.
