For bear defense, I’d say stick to 180-220 grain loads. They’ll penetrate better and create more damage.
Bullet weight matters a lot! I usually go for 200 grain XTPs. Great expansion and velocity combined make it a solid choice.
Has anyone tried the FN 10mm loads? I’ve heard they’re pretty powerful.
FN loads are decent, but you should also consider something like Cor-Bon’s 220 grain for penetration. Depth over expansion is key with bears.
Interesting thoughts! What about velocity factors? Is there a minimum you would recommend for bear defense?
I’d say keep it over 1,200 fps. Slower rounds lose energy quickly, which isn’t ideal against a bear.
Great point, joshua72! Additionally, remember that shot placement is critical. A good shot with 10mm can be effective, but don’t rely solely on firepower.
Couldn’t agree more. Still, I think it’s a tad risky to solely rely on 10mm for bears. Maybe consider a shotgun too?
A shotgun is definitely a strong option, but for those of us who prefer handguns, the 10mm can hold its own if we choose wisely.
What if we flipped the script? Can 10mm be considered overkill for smaller bear species? Asking for a friend.
Haha! I guess it depends on your friend’s aim! Better safe than sorry, right?
I believe a 10mm is a solid choice for bear encounters! With proper ammo, it can make a difference if you encounter a bear. Just be sure to practice regularly!
Totally agree! It’s powerful enough for defense but still manageable. Have you thought about a good holster? That’s key when hiking.
Weight can be crucial when hiking. How much does your 10mm setup weigh? I prefer lighter options for long trails.
Great point! I carry a heavier model for better control, but the trade-off is noticeable on long hikes.
A well-fitted holster is essential! I recommend something that can be easily accessed while hiking. Anyone have specific recommendations?
I’m using a chest holster that keeps it within easy reach. It also distributes the weight nicely while hiking.
Remember to consider safety and handling! A misfire can be dangerous, especially in bear territory. Practice is key.
Absolutely! Safety should always be the priority. Plus, making sure your ammo is bear specific can boost your odds!
Is there a particular brand of 10mm ammo you all recommend? I want something reliable for emergency situations.
