Safety is key when developing loads! Always start low and work your way up. I’ve heard too many stories of high-pressure loads causing issues. Anyone had a close call?
Definitely! I use a chronograph to track velocity. It helps me avoid high-pressure situations. It’s fascinating how small changes can really impact performance. What velocities are you targeting?
I tend to stick around 2700 fps with my loads. Great for accuracy and energy! Curious if anyone here has experimented with heavier bullets like 175 gr for long-range shooting?
I have! The 175 gr match bullets shoot surprisingly well at distance. Just be wary of the twist rate of your barrel.
True, barrel twist plays a huge role. I’ve heard the classic 1:10 twist is best for those heavier bullets. Anyone ever tried Superformance with lighter bullets?
I actually did try it with a 150 gr bullet, but felt it wasn’t as effective as 168 gr. Still, it’s worth experimenting with different combos!
Experimentation is part of the fun! Don’t forget to document your loads and results for future reference. It’s always nice to look back and see improvements. Anyone keep a detailed log?
Absolutely! My log is my best friend. It keeps me accountable. Sometimes, I even write down my thoughts on each session. Do you guys ever reflect on previous loads?
Totally! Sometimes, I think ‘what was I thinking?’ when I look back at old notes. Learning from past mistakes is key! Humor is up next, right?
Haha, yes! Like when I used way too much powder and thought I’d created a new rocket launcher instead of a rifle load. Keeping it light-hearted is important in our hobby!
Great points! Just remember, while we laugh, safety first, folks! We’ve all had our ‘oops’ moments. Let’s keep sharing safe practices and keep each other accountable!
I’ve been using Hodgdon Superformance for my .308 loads for a while now. It definitely provides great velocity and accuracy, but I find it can be a bit temperature sensitive. Has anyone else noticed this?
I have noticed the same issue with temperature sensitivity! It seems to perform much better during cool months than in the summer.
I’ve tried a few other powders, like IMR 4064 and RL15. Honestly, Superformance is great for speed, but I find the consistency with RL15 might be better for precision shooting. Just my two cents!
I love Superformance for hunting loads! It delivers flat trajectories, but for long-range, I stick with Varget. It just seems to perform better at those distances.
Superformance has definitely earned its place in my loading practices. However, I’m curious about the cleaning aspect. Does anyone notice more fouling with it compared to others like H4895?
I’ve experienced a bit more fouling too – I usually need to clean my barrel more often with Superformance.
I’ve read mixed reviews about Hodgdon Superformance. While it’s fast, I sometimes find it temp-fluctuating, which can be troubling. Are there tweaks you guys recommend to mitigate this?
I’ve used Superformance for both target and hunting but have gone back to IMR 4895 for better temperature stability. However, I appreciate Superformance’s speed.
What about the recoil? I’ve heard it can pack a punch compared to other powders. Thoughts?
