Do Fish Really Come Out When It Rains?

A friend once told me that fish are like us—they don’t like getting wet for long! Rain makes them more mobile, especially when they feel the temperature drop. Thoughts?

Haha, I love that analogy! But it’s true! Fish might swim closer to the surface to breathe easier after a rain.

I find it contentious how people only focus on fishing during rain without considering the aftereffects. Fish behavior can vary significantly depending on the type of rainfall and its duration. It’s not always straightforward.

I’ve reflected on this topic a lot. After heavy rain, I notice different types of fish in the same area, interacting in ways I don’t see during dry periods. It’s almost like a social event for them!

I’ve always found that fish tend to be more active right before and during rainy weather. The increased oxygen and movement in the water really gets them going! I usually recommend using spinnerbaits or topwater lures.

That’s so true! I often notice that during light rain, the fish seem to come closer to shore. Are there specific locations anyone prefers?

I’ve had great luck fishing near structure like fallen trees or rocky areas when it rains. The fish seem to hide there more often. Don’t forget to adjust your retrieval speed—slower tends to work better!

Great tip! Also, I find that using live bait like worms can be very effective in muddy water conditions brought on by rain.

Timing is everything! I usually have the best luck fishing early in the morning during a rainstorm or right after it stops. The fish are often more active then.

I completely agree with you, jhill! I’ve also noticed that the first rain of the season can be particularly good for fishing. Anyone else noticed this?

Absolutely, cadams! Fish seem to get more active as water temperatures change with the rain, usually leading to larger catches. Has anyone tried using scented baits? They really help attract fish in murky conditions.

Scented baits can work wonders! But I prefer to stick to the classics, like spoons and jigs. They’ve never let me down, especially during a good rain.

It’s interesting how personal preferences shape our fishing tactics. I always pack a variety to adapt based on conditions. What do you all think?

I think mixing it up is key! You never know what the fish will prefer. And hey, if nothing else works, just blame it on the weather, right? :joy:

Haha! True! But seriously, keeping a positive mindset can make a difference when fishing in less than ideal weather. What’s the best catch you’ve had during a rain?
