DIY Deer Blind Windows: How to Build Your Own!

What dimensions do you think are ideal for these windows? Balancing visibility and concealment is tricky for sure.

From my experience, windows around 12x18 inches work pretty well. They allow for good visibility without compromising cover too much.

Window height is also crucial! If they are too low, you might miss lower animals. Aiming for about waist height is usually best.

Haha, I once built these huge windows thinking I’d see everything. Turns out, I scared off more deer than I saw! Low-profile is the way to go.

I wonder if some type of camouflaged mesh could be added to reduce visibility further without sacrificing light? Any thoughts?

That’s a clever idea! I’ve used burlap on windows before, and it worked well for concealment while still providing some visibility.

Reflecting on this, I believe simplicity can be effective. Sometimes less is more when it comes to functionality in the field.

I just finished building my deer blind and installed simple vinyl windows. They fit perfectly with some careful framing! Can’t wait to share more tips.

That sounds great! What kind of sealing technique did you use? I’m worried about leaks.

Make sure you use a good quality weatherstrip around the frames. Also, caulking can really help seal any gaps for insulation.

I learned the hard way—it’s best to frame with treated wood, especially in damp locations. It keeps everything sturdy!

Definitely agree on that! I also recommend checking for drafts before winter sets in.

I added security bars after installation; it wasn’t easy, but it made me feel a lot safer while hunting!

That’s an interesting idea! Did you make them yourself or buy them?

I bought mine. It was a bit pricey, but totally worth it for the peace of mind.

Funny story—I tried to frame my windows without a plan and ended up with a crooked mess. Measure twice, cut once! Trust me.

Ha! We’ve all been there. What ended up working for you in the end?

I had to dismantle my frame and re-do it properly. I suggest sketching out a blueprint first—it saves so much trouble later!

A blueprint sounds smart! I might just follow your lead on that.
