Anyone else love their Mountain Cur x Catahoula for hunting?

I recommend introducing them in a neutral space and use treats to encourage friendliness. It has worked wonders for my girl!

Patience is key! My Mountain Cur x Catahoula mix took a while to warm up to others, but with consistent positive reinforcement, they’ve formed strong friendships.

I’ve seen great results with using clicker training for obedience. Their work ethic really shines when they learn in short, fun sessions!

Absolutely, clicker training is super effective! I’m curious, do you find any particular commands tougher for them to grasp?

For me, ‘stay’ has been the trickiest. They just want to sprint after anything that moves! Any tips on making that easier? :joy:

Haha! I feel you! I started using a leash for that command until they get it down. Just helps a bit!

Leashes can help! I’ve also found that a solid recall is vital, especially for hunting. They need to know what to do when they get excited outdoors.

Definitely! I take my mix out to the woods regularly. Socializing them out there has improved their patience and focus during training.

That’s a great idea! A change of scenery helps. My dog has a work ethic that surprises me; it’s like they were born to hunt! :evergreen_tree:

I completely relate! They thrive with the right stimulation. Do you think breeds impact their instinctual hunting abilities?

Absolutely! I’ve noticed that some traits from both breeds come out during hunting, which is fascinating!

Training with a firm yet fun approach is essential when working with this mix! They flourish under positive reinforcement, trust me.

So true! My friend jokes that each day is a game of fetch with training involved; it keeps his Mountain Cur x Catahoula busy.

I absolutely love my Mountain Cur x Catahoula! They are incredible hunting partners. Have you noticed any common health issues with the mix?

I’ve read that hip dysplasia and skin issues are common. Regular vet check-ups are super important!

Great point, Hannah! They can also be prone to ear infections if their ears aren’t cleaned regularly.

Diet is crucial! A high-quality dog food with good protein is essential for their energy levels during hunting. Anyone have suggestions?

I feed mine a mix of kibble and raw diet; they seem to thrive on it! They enjoy variety too.

Grooming needs are pretty minimal, which is nice, but regular brushing helps with shedding, especially in spring!

Oh yes! Plus, it’s a great bonding time for you and your dog.
