Bringing a portable charger can be helpful too—if you want to take photos or need GPS! Just remember to use it wisely.
Or you can just rely on your trusty old-fashioned map and your survival skills! Nothing says adventure like getting a little lost (but not too lost, right?).
I also think a hammock is a great addition! Perfect for lounging during the day and makes for a cozy hangout at night, if you don’t mind bugs.
Right? And don’t skimp on the bug spray; those mosquitoes are relentless! Ouachita can be beautiful but can also have the wildlife flying at you.
Reflecting on my last trip, I wish I had packed more snacks! Trail mix is great, but having some sweet treats makes the whole experience better. What do you all like to bring?
I’ll second that thought! Peanut butter packs are perfect—easy to carry and delicious with just about anything. Plus, they give you extra energy to hike some more!
I’ve camped in Ouachita National Forest a few times! The hiking trails are amazing, especially the Little Missouri Falls trail. It’s not too long, and the views are breathtaking!
Yes! Little Missouri Falls is definitely a favorite! I also recommend checking out the Winding Stair Mountain area. The wildflowers there are gorgeous in spring!
Don’t forget about fishing! There are some great spots like Lake Ouachita and the Caddo River. I’ve caught some nice bass and crappie there!
Fishing is awesome! Also, keep an eye out for bald eagles near the lakes; it’s quite a sight!
Wildlife viewing is fantastic too! I spotted deer and wild turkeys during my last trip. Just remember to bring your binoculars!
Agreed! I also recommend going early in the morning or near dusk for the best sightings.
How about camping spots? Any recommendations for a good site with privacy? I prefer not to camp too close to other people.
I found a great spot at Crystal Springs Campground. It has some loops that are fairly secluded.
What about the best time to visit? I hear the fall colors are stunning, but is it crowded?
Fall is beautiful, but yes, it gets crowded. I recommend going late September to early October for fewer crowds.
Just don’t forget to bring bug spray! The mosquitoes can be pretty nasty, especially in the summer. I learned that the hard way!
True that! I once had to snack on my dinner while swatting bugs away. Note to self: repellent is a must!
